"Where The Future Lives" 12" EP |
From the smoking embers of Life Partner rises...DAR.
Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Aaron Osbourne returned to his nazareth of Louisville, KY in the hungover fog of summer '19 with a satchel of songs and a tear in his eye. After dissolving the primary musical outlet of his preceding decade, the then-unrecorded material was a departure from the noise-fried, anger-fueled fuzz anthems of Life Partner, now sailing quietly toward something more fragile, something more reflective, something "other," while the city burned behind him.
Recorded at a West Louisville studio in the same industrial corridor as a seasonal haunted-house attraction (complete with gigantic sphynx-bust guarding over a shared parking lot from the roof in view of the tracking room window) by local conjurer Jim Marlowe (Tropical Trash, Equipment Pointed Ankh), Osbourne was joined by his longtime Sophomore Lounge stablemates Ryan Davis (also of Tropical Trash, State Champion) on keys / backing vox and Jenny Rose (Giving Up) lending her vocals talents to further sweeten the stash.
With a fresh and fittingly reductive approach to arranging the album's ten tunes, Osbourne trims the fat to an almost alarming extent, exposing a rare and haunting vulnerability from track to track. Unarmed by his signature feedback or reverb-flooded vocal howls to hide behind, our boy emerges not only unbeaten but in new-high songwriting form with "Where The Future Lives." This, the result, is a collection of transitional music, venturing dangerously close to and narrowly back out of the darkness, down the alley and out of sight as dawn slowly lights both the path ahead and the one it took to get here.
Emotions abound, DAR never sacrifices focus or consistency in exchange for easy effect. The songs glow with the mono-chromatic hum of a neon bar sign, each one its own hue yet completely in place with the others. As Osbourne himself would later put it, "These songs were made out of necessity. They were needed so I could survive." They illuminate not only what's next, but what nearly never was. We are lucky for this one. We are guarded by the sphynx.
